Testing Testing

Tap, tap, rat a tap, tap, tap. Click. Click.

Sniff. Cough. Shuffle, shuffle, sniff.

Scritch. Click. Scritch.

Tap, tap, rat a tap, tap, tap. Click. Click.
Keyboards click, clack, click.
Fingers tap, tap, tap
Touch type, tap, tap.

They sound like the future.
Like insects chattering across the keys.
Sending signals out to midnight blue skies.
Scritch, scritch. Click, click, tap, click.
Metallic chatter, bursts of sound.

Then there is a sigh, a shift. The plastic squeak of desk chairs
and the dusty slide of sandy-soled shoes across the linoleum.

These are the sounds of computer-based testing today.

  1. Ugh! The dreaded computer-based tests. (Not like Scantrons are much better.)

  2. Great piece! Love your figurative language. It's interesting what you can hear when all is quiet in a classroom.
